BOB-The Things That You Do b/w Thomas Edison 7”
(2011-Rerun Records #005)
Vibraphone Punk. Yet another sub-sub-sub-genre to baffle the record buying public….or maybe it’s the only real way to put the uh…vibrant sound of BOB into mere human words. Their music was the type of self taught brilliance that could have only developed during those early, really creative years of the great Punk Rock explosion. It happened in the years before Punk became an exercise in by-the-numbers monotony, and a place in which BOB could get away with using a vibraphone to accent their intense bashings…and not have the audience cry foul.
BOB formed in the middle of the late ‘70s San Francisco music scene and went on to release two singles and an LP on Dumb Records before calling it quits in 1983. “The Things That You Do” b/w “Thomas Edison” 7” from 1980 was their stunning debut. The unassuming picture sleeve, non-descript band name and lack of widespread distribution upon its original release didn’t afford them the same level of notoriety shared by some of their Bay Area counterparts….even if their sound and ideas were well ahead of the curve. It's long been championed as a “must own” platter by obsessive record geeks, but it’s been out of print and tough to track down for nearly three decades.
